Tips For Pets Afraid Of Thunder

You hear the crack of thunder in the distance and you cringe, knowing what follows next – a dog who is so afraid of the thunder that you struggle to keep him under control. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can help your dog through the storm, making life easier for both of you.

A relaxed owner means a relaxed pup

The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your pet is likely to be. Even talking to him in a soothing tone of voice can help.

A safe haven

Creating a space for your dog where he can feel safe, long before the storm arrives, is a great way to help alleviate the anxiety caused by the thunder.

Physical activity

Take your dog out for a walk, or do some training exercises with him. A little physical or mental stimulation can do wonders in terms of calming him down.

Normal playtime

If there’s a storm outside, replace the games you would have played outside with something you can safely play inside, at the same time distracting your dog from the storm.

The vet

Your vet should probably be your first port of call, especially if you have a particularly anxious dog. There are medications and even natural remedies that can be prescribed, and by no means ever overmedicate your dog.
