When to Take Your Puppy to the Vet for Vaccinations
Vaccinations protect your pet from several highly contagious diseases such as canine distemper, parvovirus infection and respiratory tract infections. It also protects against transmissible diseases such as rabies that also pose a risk to humans.
When to vaccinate
There is a specific schedule your veterinarian will help you with. Certain vaccinations are required before you take your pet home with you, others are necessary after that. ‘Re-vaccinations’ are then required. Some of these will contain a repeat rabies vaccination.
Risks
Most pets have little to no reaction to vaccination. A few have a fever and reduction in appetite, but this doesn’t last long. In very rare cases, there are severe, even life-threatening allergic reactions. When your pet is attended to immediately, treatment is successful.
Diseases
There are two types of diseases against which to vaccinate your pet. They’re divided into core- and non-core vaccinations. Core vaccinations should be administered in all regions, while non-core are only given, for instance, when a disease is prevalent in an area, and in discussion with your vet.
