5 Tips For Being A Better Pet Parent

5 Tips For Being A Better Pet Parent

We all want to give our pets the best, and you too can go from being a good parent to a great one with these tips.

Routine

Create a stress-free environment for your pets by removing uncertainty from their lives. Feed them at the same time every day, greet them the same way, exercise and play with them the same way.

Let your dog be a dog and your cat be a cat

Play with your cat like the hunter she is, and let your dog stop and sniff the roses on his walks. Not only are they different animals, but their play and interaction needs will also differ from breed to breed.

Feed the best food you can afford

Choose a PFI (Pet Food Industry of South Africa) member brand, and be assured of commitment to your pet’s health and overall wellbeing. Remember not to feed table scraps, and that any dog or cat treats form part of their daily intake.

Be responsible

Get pet or house sitters, or kennel your pets if you’re going away, chip your pets, get them used to collars (with tags) from a young age and walk them with reflective gear.

Use daily life as a training opportunity

Training is not as hard as some make out. It really can be as simple as rewarding the behaviours you want to encourage, and ignoring those you want to weed out. Keep a handful of your pet’s daily food rations on hand as a reward. Include 10 to 20 minutes of focused training per day – this is vital. Before long, you could have your pup sitting, lying, rolling over, staying and more on command; just for one more piece of whatever you normally feed him.
